Politics can definitely be heavy. The election of 2020 is undoubtedly serious. Especially as our next presidential term will begin amidst a pandemic, racial injustice, and severe inequality. But let’s be honest with ourselves: politics can totally be hilarious too. Sometimes we just have to lean into that aspect a bit more in order to keep sane.
Let’s rank some of the best, cringiest, and funniest moments from the Democratic National Convention. Upvote your favorites!
#1 The Calamari Comeback State
This one is my favorite by far. Rhode Island State Party Chairman, Joseph M. McNamara stood right beside a silent, masked man who held a plate of calamari. He then referred to Rhode Island as the “Calamari Comeback State” which just sent me. Please, just watch it. It’s one of those “you had to have been there” things.
#2 Amy Klobuchar’s Bare Feet
I honestly don’t get how this even happened with no prior thought at all, but apparently Amy Klobuchar riled up food fetish twitter by posting a picture of her bare feet on main. This is not a phrase I ever thought I’d say.
#3 John Kasich Standing at a Literal Crossroads
Kasich reminded the DNC audience that he is a lifelong Republican, but is still somehow supporting a Democratic candidate. To really send it home, he summed up his speech with the idea that “America is at a crossroads,” panning to him standing on a literal fork in the road. The creative genius.
#4 The Sheer Volume of Actual Republicans
We’ve seen John Kasich’s appearance already, but I just think it’s hilarious that we’ve gotten to a point where the two-party system is so broken. Republicans can’t back their own party, and Democrats (who once vilified even the most moderate Republicans) are greeting them with open arms.
#5 “Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t.”
Obama really decided to turn the DNC into a full Trump roast sesh. I can’t blame him. Also, I thought it was massively funny that he stood in front of a massive constitution just to get the point across. Where did he even get that?
