If the state of the world is making this October feels a bit too spooky for your taste, Ariana Grande might have just the cure in store. The singer practically broke the internet on October 14 when she tweeted about a new album to drop sometime this month.
Of course, the pop princess has kept busy throughout the long months of quarantine this past spring and summer. Grande teamed up with fellow genre royalty Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber for “Rain On Me” and “Stuck with U,” each of which have climbed to hundreds of millions of streams on Spotify. (The latter was also an effort to raise funds for the First Responders Children’s Foundation.) She also combined forces for a song with Doja Cat, although we haven’t had the privilege of seeing the fruits of that project just yet. Grande even joined the ranks of ABC’s Disney Family Singalong for a creative rendition of the Hercules classic “I Won’t Say I’m in Love.”
Given the singer’s remarks earlier this year, the news comes as something of a surprise. Back in May, Grande made it clear that she didn’t feel quite “comfortable” putting out an entirely new album at the time amidst the chaos of COVID-19 this past spring. The story now, however, seems to have changed — and if you’re a fan, it’s changed for the better. Is it still technically “quarantine?” Or have we transgressed into something of a “new normal,” at least for the time being? In my book, there’s still no conclusion on that front.
What might this next album have in store, then? Grande has been scattering a few bars here and there across the interwebs over the last few months, including a tweet vaguely captioned “brb” in mid-September with some dreamy riffs. The 5-second video has garnered a massive 5.8 million views in roughly one month.
Tayla Parx, a key cowriter for Grande’s repertoire, has also revealed that the team behind the blockbuster album thank u, next has also reconvened during the pandemic. If this album is anything like the last one, we all better buckle up for the major moments in pop culture that are sure to be right around the corner.
Ariana devotees have been taking to the hashtag #AG6IsComing for weeks now, and it looks like their wish is finally coming true. How stoked are you for the new album? Let us know in the poll below!
