Image from Hulu’s “Catherine The Great”
“The Great,” starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, recounts the (sometimes accurate) rise of Catherine the Great, ruler of Russia who rose to power in the late 1600s. The series premiered on Hulu on May 15 and has 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.0/10 on IMDB, so you know it’s doing something right. The entire cast is spectacular in the show, breathing personality and life into their respective characters. Not to mention, the set design and costumes are visually stunning and aptly transport the viewer back in time to 17th century Russia, albeit a not-so-historically-accurate 17th century Russia.
Since the series is a highly sensationalized satire and comedy, it is not always historically accurate (although, it is hella entertaining and a great watch). Hulu has even promoted the series as “anti-historical,” and writer Tony McNamara seemingly relies less on historical accuracy and more on humor and entertainment, presenting a loose version of the tsar’s rise to power. Since much of the series isn’t true, you can test your knowledge on the iconic empress with this quiz.
